The Intuitive Writing School Blog Has a New Home

This article was originally shared on Substack on September 14, 2023.

You'll like this writerly corner of the internet. Why I moved my blog of 10 years to Substack, what's next, and some free things.

If you’ve read my books, you know that I’ve physically moved a lot — 2 countries, 4 states, to the tune of 14 moves in 20 years (I think… I’ve lost track). I’m not packing up my home anytime soon (ask me again in a year or two, though ;)

You might notice this email looks and feels different from what you’re used to getting from me.

Before diving into other writerly news & why the switcheroo…

This update will let you read from the Substack app. You can also engage with your fellow Intuitive Writers in the comments, “restack” golden nuggets and quotes into “notes” (like FB but less “ugh,” explore my other writing, and support my work if you feel called.

All the writerly things you’ve been getting from me will continue to be FREE

I’m making some pivots in my business:

  • 💚 Taking on fewer done-for-you copywriting clients and focusing on coaching (it actually gets better results!), speaking, and teaching

  • 🎉 I’ve made some upgrades to the group coaching community — now with 1:1 calls and 3-hour writing & feedback sessions each month

  • 🎧 And in the co-writing community (coaching members get this too) — free weekly audios with advice for finding your writing flow each week (these audios are available to Substack subscribers too!)

  • 🎙️ A podcast! It’s been on my list to create since 2020, and I KNEW that it would be time once I released my latest book, Intuitive Writing into the world

I’ve been blogging for over a decade. It started with a little food blog, then lifestyle, and then writing about writing. And it’s still evolving. Expect topics to go DEEPER.

And if you want to go even deeper… think, intimate dinner party with twinkle lights, locally farmed, organic food, and the most refreshing elixirs money can buy, I’ve made some paid options available.

If my writing here at The Intuitive Writing School has been helpful for you these last few years, I would love to invite you to become a paid subscriber or founding member.

🙋‍♀️ 🙋‍♂️ Now… why Substack?

I’ve been having a lot of discussions about Substack (and blogging in general) with my writing community. I’ve been blogging on my website for about a decade. That’s a really long time!

Do you remember the old days of blogging? Where you could go deep into the comments, ask questions, and engage with the author?

I turned comments off on my blog years ago after spending most of my time managing spam and blocking bots. Substack is different. It’s a breath of fresh air. I subscribe to several really great publications here.

Most of all, it’s built for writers

In June 2023, when I released my book, Intuitive Writing, I also launched my author website. I wanted to keep blogging about topics that would be more fit for readers who enjoyed my first book, Unfussy Life, so I started out over here.

Readers have always resonated most with my stories and how I’ve applied the very real lessons to business and writing — and that kind of writing feels better over here.

BUT… maintaining two blogs, with so much overlap and cross-pollination, made my head hurt.

After simply writing and sharing on here several times, I saw more growth than I’d seen on my blog in years.

I’ve been recommending Substack to my community members for a while. When they say, “I’m thinking of starting a blog,” or “I want to start telling my story,” — I suggest Substack. It’s the fastest way to get started. And starting fast is important in online business. Start fast, pivot faster.

What switching to Substack looks like on the backend:

  • Migrating my MailChimp subscribers over here (took just a few minutes)

  • Removing MailChimp opt-in forms from both my websites and adding Substack opt-ins (which look a little clunky right now … I’ll fix them later)

  • I’ll leave the blogs as they are on this website  — and because I’m always revisiting and reviving old blogs, I’ll rewrite some with important refreshes over here

  • December 2023 update: I moved my marketing emails to Podia where I offer my free and paid classes, and community (there’s an affiliate link in here)

A big thank you to ❤️ Jenny Blake and her BFF community. A few months ago, she lost a big client, and her honest and very relatable look into navigating “what’s next?” as well as how she led the way and migrated her (much bigger than mine) lists to Substack — embracing fast pivots and figuring it out as she goes — well… that’s also how I roll.

I hope you enjoy reading what’s next on this journey. Some topics that are on deck in my Q4 content plan:

  • Trigger warnings on your writing — should you use them?

  • Why I don’t suggest anyone tries to “find” their writing voice

  • A behind-the-scenes look at how I created a planner for my intuitive writing
