An Unfussy Book Launch for an Unfussy Book

My book, Unfussy Life: An Intuitive Approach to Navigating Change is here!

If you bought it already, thank you. I happy dance every time I see an order come in.

Cases of hardcovers arrived at my doorstep this week, and after signing them, they're going out to their new homes this week.

I'm so grateful for all the love and support. Peeps have also been texting me the past week...

So, how does it feel?"
"What did you do to celebrate?"
"How's the whole launch thing going?"

A book with the title Unfussy Life can only come out in one way — UNFUSSY AF.

Here's the unfussy (read: surrendered) way I launched my unfussy book.

Sure, the book took more than three years. Also, know that I wasn’t actively writing it every single day for three years. Actually, the opposite. I wrote it all fast and furious.

In 2017, I participated in NaNoWriMo for the first time and worked on my book.

Then, I let it sit for the next 11 months.

I picked it back up again in November 2018, where I edited the entire thing. I touched it in fits and spurts until November 2019, when I revised most of it and added tens of thousands of words.

Sure, I had a goal of finishing it by my 40th birthday in September. But you know how 2020 went.

It was an unfussy and windy road to holding the book in my hands. And if you told me in November 2017 that the book would take three years to finish, I might not have even started.

But I’m very happy that I did start it.

Your future self will always thank you for starting a big writing project.

It transformed into a completely different project after a phone call one afternoon with an intuitive consultant, which wasn’t even my intention for the chat. The purpose was to connect about business things, and then the book came up.

“Tell me about the book,” she said.

I told her it was self-development, all about becoming more unfussy in your life. She paused for a long second before continuing...

“You’re going to hate me — that's not your book. Your book is a memoir."

I didn’t believe her — until I did.

A week ago today, I launched my book to the world. I don’t tell you this as an example of what you should do — I didn’t hit bestseller lists or make millions. That wasn’t (and isn’t) the goal of this book.

The goal was "get this thing out of me!!!" It’s to release it into the world — picture a water birth.

I’m guessing here because I had c-sections (which you’ll read about in the book), but I’d imagine that water birth is gentle, quiet, serene, and relaxing. Well, except for the pushing the baby out part.

And then, instead of forcing the book to skyrocket to success in just one day — the equivalent of putting your newborn in dress clothes and sending them off to college.

I did much of it at the last minute. Not in a forced, frantic kind of way, but in an “I must feel inspired about this to write” kind of way.

The week before the launch, I drafted the book sales page, updated my author bios on all my social media sites, and plugged some quotes into social graphics.

I had a small problem with the cover, so I had to order a new proof copy. I received the new hardcover just two days before launch. I proofed it quickly and then ordered a few cases. Praying and trusting the next batch would be perfect.

Not optimal for the risk averse. I would have loved to have had the box of books here and ready to go so I could ship out all the books to the amazing people who ordered right away — but it didn’t unfold that way.

Instead, they’ll get it within two weeks of the launch date. It was either that or delay the launch again — which I didn’t want to do.

Here’s what I did on book launch day:

  • Starting Sunday night, I spent the day relaxing — it was a rainy, stormy day, I enjoyed a good dinner, and was in bed by 9 (which really is nothing new)

  • Monday morning, I let myself sleep in (6:30) as in — I didn’t force myself to go to the gym

  • Also, in the luteal phase of my cycle, I put rest first. I knew that being visible on a week when I’ll have less energy and feel less social would call for some rest first.

  • It was a regular old day of taking the kids to school, walking the dog, going to my new office outside the home (also a productivity game-changer)

  • Came home, made dinner — my favorite — gluten-free spaghetti with spicy tomato sauce

  • Took my favorite daughter for a pedi

  • Watched the sunset and opened a gift from friends (and proceeded to accidentally drop part of the gift (an aura spray) and shatter it into a billion pieces, and cut my fingers while trying to clean it

It was perfect.

And the rest of the week…
I really enjoyed playing with some videos and recording chapter readings on Instagram.

I intentionally had a spacious calendar last week. I mean, as spacious as I could with family, school, and all that goes along with it. I gave myself plenty of space for unfussy meals — we had tacos twice, and by the weekend, I went even further by going out for or picking up dinner Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

An extended celebration, if you will.

Speaking of celebrations, we had a little happy hour inside the Intuitive Writing School Community— we raised a glass, shared stories, and got to know each other a little better. It was so easy and fun and will definitely be something we’ll continue to do together inside the community.

You’ll continue hearing more from behind the scenes of this unfussy book launch.

How to get the book:

  • eBook and paperback on Amazon — ebook and paperback HERE

  • hardcover (signed if you like) through me HERE, and it'll usually ship the same week

If you read it (YAY!) I'd be over the moon if you left a few kind words on Amazon and Goodreads.

Cheers to you and your Unfussy Life.
